Financing Your Study in the United States

Do you want to study in the United States? You should be aware of the cost of attending a U.S. school. If you enroll, you are responsible for all related costs including tuition, room and board, and travel. While the expenses associated with enrolling in U.S. schools may be high, there are many benefits to an American education.

You should know that schools sometimes offer financial aid and scholarships for their F and M students. Once you receive acceptance to a Student and Exchange Visitor Program-certified school, you can talk to someone in the financial aid office to find available opportunities.
Your school may offer a work-study program for F students as part of a financial aid package. If so, remember that you may work in the United States only with appropriate employment authorization. You must have approval from your designated school official (DSO) for any employment – even on-campus employment for a work-study program.
Remember that you must have a Social Security number to be employed. If you earn wages in the United States, you need to pay income taxes.
It is important to begin planning for how you will finance your studies in the United States because you must provide evidence of financial support to three people:
  • Your DSO
  • A consular official at your visa appointment with the Department of State
  • U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at a U.S. port of entry (every time you enter the United States during your time as an F student)
If you have questions during your planning, visit your local EducationUSA office for more information.
